BEDFORD, N.H. – There are approximately 23.2 million military veterans in the U.S., including 9.2 million over the age of 65. As the nation pays tribute to American servicemen and women, living and dead, this Veterans Day – November 11 – Compassus reminds communities of the recognition and compassionate care they deserve when dealing with serious illness.
As a Level IV We Honor Veterans hospice provider, Compassus – Bedford provides specialized care to veterans who are facing a life-limiting illness. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs created We Honor Veterans to empower hospice and other healthcare providers across the country to meet the unique needs of seriously ill veterans and their families.
“Through We Honor Veterans, we are giving our healthcare professionals and volunteers a deeper understanding of veterans and their needs to best serve them at the end of life,” said Michele Martino, executive director of Compassus – Bedford. “These servicemen and women deserve dignity and respect, and we at Compassus have the necessary training and skills to provide them the highest quality care.”
There are four levels of distinction within the WHV program that a hospice program can achieve based on its involvement with veteran education and its interaction with the veterans and family members for which they care. The goal at each level is to ensure the very best care is being provided to those who have served our country.
“Our team is dedicated to providing compassionate care and comfort to veterans at the end of life,” continued Martino. “As we recognize and celebrate our nation’s heroes this Veterans Day – and every day of the year – we must not forget that it is never too late to give them a hero’s welcome home.”
The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization is the largest nonprofit membership assocation representing hospice and palliative care programs and professionals in the U.S. Its members are committed to improving end-of-life care and expanding access to hospice care with the goal of profoundly enhancing quality of life for people dealing with life-limiting illness and their loved ones.
The mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs is to fulfill President Lincoln’s promise “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan,” by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans.
