CINCINNATI – The Compassus hospice program serving Cincinnati and the surrounding areas is currently seeking volunteers to provide comfort and support to patients and families in need of end-of-life care.

“Volunteers help make our mission a reality here at Compassus,” said Bridget Lewis, volunteer coordinator for Compassus – Cincinnati. “Whether simply providing companionship or a listening presence, each gesture – no matter how small – makes a meaningful impact on those we serve.”

The mission of Compassus is to provide the highest quality and compassionate hospice care. By addressing their physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs, Compassus enhances the quality of life of patients and their families. An integral part of the care team, volunteers are relied upon to provide support, companionship and dignity to members of the community facing serious and life-limiting illness.

Volunteers can give their talents and time in many ways:

  • Patient Support Volunteers: Through friendly visits, volunteers provide emotional support to patients and respite for caregivers. Possible activities include reading to patients, preparing meals and running errands.

  • ANGEL Volunteers (Allegiance of Neighbors Giving End-of-Life Support): ANGEL volunteers provide a physical, compassionate presence during the last hours of life to hospice patients with only one or no primary caregiver.

  • Pet Therapy Volunteers: Volunteers with certified pet therapy animals offer hospice patients comfort and companionship during the final months and weeks of life.

  • Music Therapy Volunteers: Whether singing or playing an instrument, music therapy volunteers share the gift of music with patients.

All participants receive special training on many aspects of hospice care and can choose to dedicate as little as two hours a month to as much as six hours a week.
